SEO on a new website, what should you expect?
So you have a brand new website, freshly built and you are ready to start releasing it to the world, what should you expect in terms of results?
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) can be quite overwhelming if you are not sure exactly what you are aiming for. The Google search algorithm is sometimes a mystery and there are no quick tricks to appearing strongly in their search results.
An SEO campaign is an on-going task. It’s like trying to eat healthily, if a diet lasts a few weeks and it dies out after you have indulged into your favourite sugary food, you wouldn’t expect to get stick thin, (although I’m sure we all hoped it worked that way!) SEO is the same in essence, it’s something you need to keep working on.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when considering SEO.
Timescale:
Your new website may look good, showcasing your services and products perfectly but it is not established or shall we say “out there” yet.
The Google Search algorithm takes into account the age of your domain as a factor and can use this to rank it based upon the age of the other websites in competition. It’s important to bear in mind that from the start you will be fighting against older, more established domains with potentially more ranking power due to its heritage and history. Don’t worry, with diligent work on SEO, you are likely to start seeing a good return on efforts within the first 6 to 12 months. Don’t expect to appear prominently in search results straight away, one thing is certain, SEO takes time!
Keywords:
Search engine success also depends on which terms you want to rank well for, if you choose a keyword term such as, blue square tiling, you will have an easier time ranking highly rather than “tiles” for example as it’s a much broader term and means there will be much more competition.
If you have a unique brand name you will probably find yourself straight to the top of search engine page rankings. (SERPs) for your brand name relatively quickly. Good keyword research is very important and will help you find those treasure chests of “High relevance, low traffic competition” terms to target. They may not bring billions to your site they will have a much better off conversion value due to lining up strongly with the user’s search intent.
Waiting for traffic to kick in? What can I do?
First of all, you need to know your audience, if you’re aiming at a customer base that you know has a large social media voice, get involved on these different platforms and start engaging with them. This can be a stellar way to get your brand name out there, seeing your upturn in media platforms traffic can be rewarding to see!
Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are the main ones, try to build a presence on these and build a fan base. You may see some initial results and over the first 3 months. Dominating in SERP’s takes a lot of time and dedication so please don’t feel like you’re doing anything wrong because I assure you, you are not. Results do not come by immediately. Persistence is key!
